A new and beautiful tradition in honour of Latvia's 90th Birthday is starting this year in Rīga - the Staro Rīga lighting festival. Unique lit up objects of art, specially illuminated building facades, squares and bridges constituting more than 40 objects in total, will be on view in the streets and parks of the capital city's centre from the 14th to the 18th of November, motivating people to see familiar places in a different light. link www.lv90.lv

November 18 Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia. On this day in 1918 in what is nowadays the National Theatre in Rīga, the Republic of Latvia was proclaimed as an independent state. In a favourable situation in the wake of World War I, Latvian political groups realised their dream of establishing an independent state. The first period of existence of the Republic of Latvia lasted up to June 17, 1940, when Soviet forces occupied the country.
