This summer famous Balkan composer and musician Goran Bregovic will return to One could not imagine that a gypsy orchestra for weddings and funerals may perform Bizet’s « CARMEN » even if it is the only opera featuring a gypsy as the main character. A gypsy orchestra has a free and melancholy soul, comes night it dreams of the roads it travelled in day-time, it believes in God but does not abandon the superstition, loves mighty stories about sex and money, on condition they have a happy ending…. So, what does Bregovic do when he wants to reinvent Bizet’s opera for his orchestra? Not only does he call it « KARMEN », but he also imagines it as a tale of weddings and funerals, intriguingly complex and crowned with a happy ending. |
This Carmen with a K is part gypsy, part suburban. Two men fight a duel for her, but this time the story does not end with the tragic repudiation by a blinded crowd, but with a musical feast that celebrates full blast and full rhythm the double marriage between Karmen and her childhood love and between Michaela and her sturdy policeman fiancé, cured from love for the irresistible gypsy.
Performances: June 18th, 19th and 20th Dzintaru concert hall.

Performances will be translated in Latvian and Russian with subtitles.
