November 21 the Healthcare Ministry of Latvia took the initiative to forbid smoking in all inner facilities. The LNT TV Channel reports that the Ministry intends to introduce the plan little by little: starting from the year 2008 "smoking-rooms" shall be prohibited in all the educational institutions. Movie theatres, gyms and other places of the type shall follow them. Besides, the cigarette prices shall be nearly doubled.
According to the instructions of the European Union, the excise tax for cigarettes shall be increased by 90% from January 1, 2008. That shall push up the cost of the tobacco goods by 50-80%. One shall have to pay LVL 0, 90 for a cigarette box that costs now LVL 0, 50.
